The men's rugby program was established in 1970 as a club sport (Norwich University Rugby Football Club) founded by Rufus Boyett, Professor Bernie Clark, and Professor Steve Ingram. The Norwich women followed in 1984 as their initial year as a club program. Led by Theresa (Maggio) Knizewski, Robin (Cleveland) Mongeon and Betsey Pendergast, the gals played their inaugural season in the spring of 1984. The programs were both elevated to the varsity level in the fall of 2008.

Both programs have enjoyed significant success at the varsity level with the women winning six national championships between 2011 and 2014 under the USA Rugby and American Collegiate Rugby Association (ACRA) banners. The men have enjoyed their own run of success the last four seasons, qualifying for the USA Rugby Division II 15s and 7s Tournaments seven consecutive times, including three trips to the 15s final four.
